Merbau Wood

Merbau wood surface with natural grain texture

Merbau Wood

Merbau wood is a hardwood material used in custom furniture and interior woodwork. It usually has a yellow-brown to reddish-brown color, deeper grain and high wood density, giving a natural and solid visual appearance. Compared with common woods such as pine and oak, Merbau usually offers better hardness, wear resistance and weather resistance, making it more suitable for high-strength, outdoor or semi-outdoor woodwork projects rather than standard lightweight cabinet materials. Merbau can be used as solid wood, or processed into veneer and applied over stable substrates such as plywood or MDF. Its actual performance depends on wood grade, origin, moisture content control, drying process, finishing process, surface maintenance method and the final application environment.

Materials Detail

Common Thickness

18mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 40mm, 50mm

Suitable Surface Treatments

Outdoor oil, wood wax oil, clear coat, PU finish, weather-resistant coating, protective clear coating

Suitable Applications

Flooring, doors and windows, high-strength furniture, outdoor or semi-outdoor woodwork, landscape woodwork, and durable wood components in commercial spaces, hotel projects or outdoor supporting projects.

Not Suitable For

Lightweight door panels, low-budget projects, projects that require fine light-color finishes, standard small cabinet doors, or projects with strict requirements for weight control, fast on-site processing or low-cost transportation and installation.

Advantages

High hardness, good stability and good moisture and decay resistance under proper use and maintenance. Suitable for high-strength applications, outdoor or semi-outdoor areas and high-use positions that require better durability.

Limitations

Relatively heavy, more difficult to process, demanding on cutting tools and more expensive than common wood materials. Transportation, installation, hardware connection and on-site construction conditions also require more attention.

Key Notes

Merbau is hard and heavy, so tool wear can be faster during processing, and hardware connection positions should usually be pre-drilled. For outdoor or semi-outdoor projects, drainage, ventilation, surface maintenance and end-grain sealing should be considered. Its weather resistance should not be understood as long-term water soaking resistance or complete maintenance-free performance. For batch projects, confirm wood grade, origin, moisture content, color range and batch consistency before production.
